The Materials and Equipment Technologist supports programs in the the Faculty of Technology and Skilled Trades across multiple campuses. These programs are high users of expensive consumable inputs such as steel and are capital intensive, resulting in the need for continued and close oversight of consumable costs and asset maintenance. The Materials and Equipment Technologist plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient operation of programs by managing consumable materials, tracking equipment performance, analyzing data to optimize costs and operations, purchasing materials, and communicating and collaborating effectively with multiple stakeholders, both internal and external.
Specific duties include:
1. Track materials, assess ordering needs, purchase, and manage bulk ordering schedules.
2. Analyze and interpret operational data, material pricing, and budget data to identify trends and cost-savings, optimize processes, and proactively address potential issues.
3. Monitor materials and equipment prices and trends and use data to advise appropriate cost-saving decisions.
4. Interact with suppliers, analyze costs, and negotiate favorable pricing and terms.
5. Monitor equipment performance and maintain a database of maintenance schedules and equipment tooling requirements.
6. Investigate and recommend equipment sharing across multiple programs, for both existing equipment and new purchases.
7. Monitor and evaluate budgets to ensure efficiencies, anticipate potential shortfalls or necessary adjustments and communicate related information.
