The Indigenous Birth Support Worker provides culturally safe, trauma-informed, and community-based perinatal support to Indigenous families living in an urban setting. This role supports Indigenous parents throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period by offering emotional, informational, advocacy, and cultural support within hospitals, clinics, homes, and community spaces.
Recognizing that urban Indigenous communities include people from many Nations, this role honours diverse cultural identities and supports families in reconnecting with culture, choice, and self-determination in their birthing experiences.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide emotional, informational, and cultural support throughout pregnancy
Support clients in navigating urban healthcare systems and appointments
Assist with birth planning that reflects client values, safety, and preferences
Share Indigenous teachings and practices related to pregnancy and birth when appropriate, respecting diverse Nation-specific protocols
Advocate for informed consent and culturally safe care
Provide continuous, non-medical labour support in hospitals, birth centres, or home settings
Offer physical comfort measures, emotional reassurance, and grounding support
Support clients in communicating needs, boundaries, and cultural requests within clinical environments
Provide emotional and practical support during the postpartum period
Support infant feeding, bonding, and adjustment to parenthood
Assist clients in connecting with urban Indigenous programs, health services, and community supports
Provide culturally grounded postpartum teachings and care practices, where appropriate
Support clients in accessing housing, food security, mental health, child welfare prevention, and parenting resources as needed
Build relationships with urban Indigenous organizations, healthcare providers, and social services
Support continuity of care across multiple systems
