Job Description
The Guidance Counselor provides information, guidance and support to students in career exploration in classrooms, small groups and individual settings. The Guidance Counselor functions as a school liaison with other schools and post secondary institutions. In addition, the Guidance Counselor provides personal counseling to individual students and small groups concerning relationship issues, anger management, and other school related problem areas. The Guidance Counselor provides information, guidance and support to students in career exploration in classrooms, small groups and individual settings. The Guidance Counselor functions as a school liaison with other schools and post secondary institutions. In addition, the Guidance Counselor provides personal counseling to individual students and small groups concerning relationship issues, anger management, and other school related problem areas. The Guidance Counselor is part of the school student support team dedicated to enhancing student performance and well being.
Skills
Counselor will initiate appointments with students
Host Individual or group sessions regarding career planning
Assist students in high school course registration and graduation requirements
Advise students on entrance requirements and provide current information on increasing their chances on being accepted post-secondary programs
Assist students with career interests and pathways
Provide information about and/or arrange Career Exploration experiences including Career Fairs, Spend-a-Days, Job Shadowing, etc.
Work in collaboration with the Post Sec Coordinator to gather information and resources on financing post-secondary education (post-secondary funding applications, student scholarships search and application, student loan applications)
Work in collaboration with the Post Sec Coordinator to assist students in making the transition from secondary school to post-secondary education or work (apprenticeship, technical, university, private schools, regional colleges, pre-employment programs)
Provide access to unofficial transcripts and awareness of the procedures for transmitting official transcripts for post-secondary schools
